£250m of British talent primed for transfers in last 10 days of summer window (2024)

An unspectacular transfer window so far is set to explode into life over the next week. Big names including England internationals at top clubs are part of a cycle of buying and selling that fans hope will reshape their club's fortunes. But who are the stars for sale?

The futures of some big name experienced internationals are up for grabs with ten days to go before the transfer window shuts.

Clubs are scrambling to balance the books, move on big earners or cash in on home-grown, pure profit stars who are no longer in the starting XI and will do wonders for their Profit and Sustainability balance sheets.

Chief execs are under pressure to buy and sell. Tension, bluff, double bluff, negotiation and compromise is gnawing away behind the scenes. Mirror Football looks at the big names up for sale and assesses whether deals can be done to keep these star men, and Premier League title winners, happy with their lot.

Raheem Sterling

At 29, Sterling is far from past it, but his Chelsea career is over, a high profile victim of the London club’s £185m, 11 player, 40+ squad member spending spree.

They need to sell, not only Raheem, but a few others too, but the England veteran is the highest profile.

He’s won four league titles, an FA Cup, five League Cups and a runners up medal in the Champions League as well as 82 England caps, but his statement on Sunday expressing surprise at not being involved against Man City shows he wants to play. Cash rich Crystal Palace could be an ideal destination, or ambitious West Ham.

Ivan Toney

A few months ago the England striker was being touted as a £100m man, destined for Arsenal, Spurs or Chelsea. It’s not quite worked out like that in terms of football ambition… but Toney’s bank balance will certainly be the beneficiary.

Toney, 28, was left out of Brentford’s opener against Palace, and a £35m offer from Saudi side Al-Ahli rejected. That’s been upped to £50m and Toney looks set to go, earning £20m a year on the way. What it will do to his England career is another matter.

Marc Guehi

The England defender’s stock has risen since the Euros this summer. Newcastle are confident Guehi wants to join them and become their biggest summer signing. But the Geordies' negotiating skills are being tested to the limit and they have gone to £65/70m without getting their man.

Palace are exploiting the situation brilliantly. The Toon are getting desperate to prove their ambition, and have a new Sporting Director Paul Mitchell, and chief exec Darren Eales now in charge of bartering, and both are under pressure… and Palace know it! I suspect that deal will get done, eventually, with a few twists on the way.

Joe Gomez

An accomplished England and Liverpool defender, there should be plenty of takers for Gomez, who was left out of the Anfield squad at the weekend as he considers his transfer future.

A move depends on Liverpool not pricing him out of one. The 27-year-old offers Newcastle an experienced alternative to Guehi, but they’d prefer Jarell Quansah. Aston Villa would be attractive given their Champions League campaign ahead, and Palace could also get in on the defender merry-go-round.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho wasn’t involved in Manchester United’s opener against Fulham on Friday and looks set for another loan deal, or if United get their way, a sale.

United have spent more than £155m on four new stars this window and could do with balancing the books after backing Erik ten Hag on and off the pitch. It is unlikely his fall out with Ten Hag will be smoothed over.

Scott McTominay

Another big asset left out of United’s squad for the first game. It is time for the Scotland international to move on and become a leading light at a mid-table club.

Talks with Fulham have been revived, while there is a question mark over whether Everton could afford his £30m price tag.

Kieran Trippier

The England right back has a year left on his Toon contract. He’s just been made vice-captain at Newcastle but was not in their starting XI against Southampton, with Tino Livramento ahead of him.

Trippier had to turn out for the Uunder 21 team on Monday night for fitness work. Time for a move? Boss Eddie Howe wants to keep him, and all of his squad, but there could be pressure from above to cash in for £10m. 'Tripps' is a huge player for United, but a three or four year deal elsewhere, possibly abroad, would surely be tempting.
