How to Use Instruments for Chakra Healing

Chakra sounds are specific vibrations that resonate with each of the 7 chakras in the human body. Listening to these chakra sounds can bring balance, healing, and awakening to different parts of your mind, body, and spirit.

In this guide, learn about the meaning and power behind each chakra sound, different ways to create chakra sounds, as well as some chakra audio tracks to get you started.

The Healing Power of Sound

While the concept of chakra sounds is rooted in ancient traditions, there has also been a lot of scientific research into sound vibrations and their impact on the physical body.

Studies have shown that specific frequencies can influence brainwave activity, heart rate, and other physiological processes.

Certain sounds have been found to reduce tension, anxiety, boost cognitive functioning and even alleviate the symptoms of depression.

Everything in the universe, including sound, consists of vibrations. Sound waves travel through the air, interacting with our bodies and influencing our physical and mental state.

“The whole existence is a kind of sound, or a complex amalgamation of sounds – the whole existence is an amalgamation of various mantras.”

Sadhguru

What Are Chakra Sounds?

Chakra sounds are interpreted differently by different spiritual traditions – don’t worry I’m going to cover all the different interpretations in this guide to give you a really thorough understanding!

Chakra frequencies (which I cover below) are actually quite a modern idea, in ancient Vedic texts (spiritual texts used in the Hindu tradition) chakra sounds refer to mantras or chants. In ancient times, mantras would be said during meditation practices, prayers and rituals to help people connect on a spiritual level and enter a deeper meditative state.

It wasn’t until the late 20th Century that energy practitioners began to analyze frequencies and the effect these had on our physical and subtle body.

Dr. Joseph Puleo, a naturopathic doctor, published a guide to Solfeggio Frequencies in 1999 which set out, for the first time, ancient sound frequencies that were believed to have healing properties.

These frequencies were later adopted by New Age and alternative healing practitioners who attributed a specific frequency to each of the major chakras.

Some energy and meditation teachers interpret chakra sounds as musical notes. Just like frequencies, when these notes are played they release vibrations which resonate with specific chakras. The idea is exactly the same, it’s just another way of identifying the sounds.

All these interpretations share the same core belief that we consist of vibrations and tuning these vibrations can impact our spiritual, emotional and physical experience.

Benefits of Chakra Sounds

Just like a tuning fork can resonate with another of the same frequency, chakra sounds are believed to resonate with the specific frequencies of each chakra.

By listening to or chanting these specific sounds, we can influence the energy flow within each chakra. This can be like tuning a musical instrument, bringing the chakra back into balance and harmony.

Balancing and activating our energy centers through sound can offer a range of potential benefits, including:

  • Improved physical health: Enhanced energy levels, reduced stress, and relief from specific ailments associated with imbalanced chakras.
  • Emotional well-being: Increased feelings of peace, joy, and emotional stability.
  • Spiritual growth: Deeper connection to intuition, self-awareness, and a profound sense of purpose.

What are Chakra Frequencies?

Each chakra vibrates at its own unique frequency, similar to a musical note. These frequencies resonate with specific aspects of our being, influencing our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

The most commonly cited frequencies (and the ones I refer to in this article) come from the Solfeggio Frequencies but it’s worth noting that each of the chakras can resonate with a range of frequencies.

The key concept is that by listening to or chanting sounds at these specific frequencies, we can resonate with the energy of the corresponding chakra. This can be seen as a form of “tuning” the chakra, bringing it back into balance and harmony.

You might find that you resonate with slightly different frequencies, and that’s perfectly valid. The key is to approach them with an open mind and experiment to see what resonates with you.

7 Chakra Frequencies

Each chakra has a particular frequency which when listened to can help us connect with the potent energy of these centers.

7 Chakra Notes

Chakra notes are another way to interpret chakra sounds. Each of the seven main chakras are associated with a specific musical note. Playing these notes can release vibrations which are particularly healing for the chakras.

Here are the musical notes commonly associated with the seven main chakras:

  1. Root Chakra (Muladhara): Note C
  2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhishthana): Note D
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): Note E
  4. Heart Chakra (Anahata): Note F
  5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha): Note G
  6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna): Note A
  7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): Note B

Different Forms of Chakra Sounds

There are many different ways to experience the healing power of chakra sounds, including:

  • Chanting bija mantras: These single-syllable seed sounds are unique to each chakra and carry their specific vibration.
  • Listening to chakra-specific audio tracks: You can find chakra audio tracks which are tuned to specific frequencies to help you connect with your individual chakras.
  • Using instruments: Certain musical instruments can be used to produce certain notes which can help you rebalance your chakras.

Let’s look at how to use these different forms of chakra sounds.

Bija Mantras

Bija mantras are the heart and soul of chakra sounds. Sometimes referred to as “seed syllables”, mantras are thought to carry the essence and vibration of each chakra.

Mantras were a key part of Vedic tradition, the earliest texts of Hinduism. They were used in rituals, mantra meditation and other spiritual practices. The particular intonation and vibration of these mantras were believed to have healing properties and help you connect with the divine.

Bija mantras are one syllable mantras or vowel sounds. In fact Bija translates to “seed” in Sanskrit, and just like seeds these single-syllable sounds hold the potential to blossom into powerful vibrations.

In some traditions, Bija mantras are seen as embodying the very essence of the divine. Chanting them is considered a form of spiritual practice, connecting the individual to their higher self and the universe’s energy.

“Prana… is the spirit of mantra. Mantra in turn is the expression of prana. Whatever most engages our prana or vital energy becomes the main subject of our speech.”

Dr. David Frawley (Vamadeva Shastri)

Each chakra has its own bija seed mantra, carrying a unique sound and meaning:

  • Root Chakra Mantra (Muladhara): LAM
  • Sacral Chakra Mantra (Svadhisthana): VAM
  • Solar Plexus Chakra Mantra (Manipura): RAM
  • Heart Chakra Mantra (Anahata): YAM
  • Throat Chakra Mantra(Vishuddha): HAM
  • Third Eye Chakra Mantra (Ajna): OM
  • Crown Chakra Mantra (Sahasrara): OM

How to Chant Bija Mantras

There are no strict rules for chanting bija mantras, but you might find it helpful to follow this simple routine for chakra toning:

1. Find a Comfortable Position

Sit comfortably with your spine straight. Close your eyes to minimize external distractions.

2. Focus Your Mind

Start with some deep breathing to center yourself. Focus on the area of the chakra you wish to activate or balance. Envisioning the color associated with that chakra can also enhance your focus (e.g., red for the Root Chakra, orange for the Sacral Chakra, etc.).

3. Pronounce the Bija Mantra Slowly and Clearly

Begin chanting the chakra vowel sounds softly and clearly. For most bija mantras, the sound should be sustained as long as your breath allows. Pay attention to the pronunciation:

  • LAM is pronounced as lum in “plum.”
  • VAM sounds like vum in “thumb.”
  • RAM is pronounced as rum in “rumble.”
  • YAM sounds like yum in “yummy.”
  • HAM is pronounced as hum in “humble.”
  • OM (or AUM) encompasses the sounds a-u-m, starting from the back of the throat to the lips.

4. Chant with Intention

As you chant, maintain your focus on the chakra and your intention. Whether seeking healing, balance, or spiritual growth, your intention helps direct the mantra’s energy.

5. Repeat

Repeat the mantra – traditionally, mantras would be said 108 times, but don’t feel you have to repeat it that many times. Simply do as many repetitions as feels comfortable for you.

6. Meditate After Chanting

Once you finish chanting, stay silent for a few minutes. Observe any sensations, emotions, or thoughts that arise, allowing yourself to simply be in the moment.

7. Practice Regularly

The benefits of chanting chakra vowels increase with regular practice. It helps to incorporate this powerful practice into your daily routine, even if only for a few minutes at a time.

It’s important to remember that Bija mantras are more than just sounds or seed syllables. They are healing sounds which carry rich cultural and spiritual significance, connecting us to ancient spiritual traditions. Approaching them with respect and openness will enhance your experience.

Musical instruments are another way to explore chakra sounds and influence your energy flow.

Instruments have been used for healing and spiritual purposes for centuries, and each instrument possesses unique vibrational qualities.

By aligning specific instruments with particular chakras and their frequencies, you can create personalized soundscapes for targeted healing.

Popular Instruments for Chakra Healing

  • Tuning forks: Precisely calibrated to specific chakra frequencies, tuning forks create single tone focused sound vibrations.
  • Tibetan singing bowls: Their rich, resonant tones can stimulate and balance different chakras depending on their size and pitch.
  • Crystal singing bowls: Crystal singing bowls produce beautiful sounds which can be tuned to specific chakras.
  • Bells: The clear, high-pitched tones of bells are particularly good for stimulating the Throat Chakra, encouraging communication and self-expression.
  • Percussion instruments: Instruments such as gongs or drums can produce a range of powerful sounds that can energize and rebalance your chakras.
  • Woodwind instruments: Certain woodwind instruments like the didgeridoo or panpipes can produce pure sounds which can help you connect with your subtle body. Likewise string instruments like cellos can also be very healing.

How to Use Instruments for Chakra Healing

Use these simple tips to get the most out of your sound healing session:

  1. Choose the right instrument: Select an instrument aligned with the chakra you wish to target, considering its frequency or vibrational qualities.
  2. Create a calming space: Prepare a quiet and comfortable environment which will support relaxation and introspection.
  3. Set your intention: Clearly focus on the desired outcome, whether it’s balancing a specific chakra, releasing negativity, or creating a relaxing environment.
  4. Play the instrument: Gently play the instrument near the corresponding chakra location on your body or around your aura. Experiment with different techniques like placing the instrument directly on your physical body, moving it in circular motions, or chanting along with the sound.
  5. Observe and feel: Be present in the moment and pay attention to the sensations you experience. Allow the sounds to wash over you and observe any emotional or physical shifts.

Start with short sessions and gradually increase the duration as you become comfortable. Combine using instruments with meditation, visualization, or affirmations for enhanced benefits.
