Indiana Fever vs. Chicago Sky final score, results: Caitlin Clark wins first WNBA showdown vs. Angel Reese | Sporting News (2024)

The first matchup between the two biggest stars of the WNBA rookie class went down to the wire.

The Fever, led by former Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, outlasted the Sky, led by former LSU forward Angel Reese, to pick up a 71-70 victory — their second of the season and first on their home court.

The clash was filled with fireworks. And in the end, it delivered. Clark continued to showcase flashes of her glimmering potential, collecting 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists while playing all but four minutes on Saturday. Reese offered a similar level of production, although the vast majority of her impact came on the boards: she nabbed 13 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive glass.

There were a few flashpoints in the contest, namely when one of Clark's primary markers, Chennedy Carter, checked her into the floor following a basket. Reese was seemingly enthused by the play, offering support for her teammate as she strutted back down the floor.

Reese and Clark got into a tangle of their own later in the contest, although another examination appeared to show that Clark embellished the call more than anything else. Nevertheless, the drama refused to dissipate, particularly as the Sky attempted to mount a late-game comeback.

But a missed Marina Mabry free throw, coupled with some spotty late-game execution on the ensuing Fever possession, relegated Chicago (3-4) to a fourth loss of the year.

As for Indiana (2-8), it takes its talents to New York for a battle with the Liberty, the same side that tore it apart a few weeks earlier.

1:25 p.m.:Boston with some impressive resiliency. Found the target after missing a previous three attempts — and corralling the rebound for each of them.

1:18 p.m.:Clark exits the matchup after taking bit of contact from Cardoso. Looked like she might've landed awkwardly.

1:05 p.m.:Smith tips things off with a delicate hook shot. 13 points for the Baylor product.

End of second quarter: Fever 35, Sky 33

12:48 p.m.:Reese's mid-range jumper proves the last of the quarter as the Fever walk into the locker room with a two-point edge.

12:47 p.m.:Indiana's supporting cast is coming through in a big way! Smith just took Reese to the cleaners on the post-up, side-stepping beyond her before finishing her layup with aplomb. Mitchell follows that up with yet another basket to pull Indiana out in front.

12:43 p.m.:Kelsey Mitchell drains a triple, then follows that up with an uncontested layup on the fast break. Her five-point flourish levels the game at 31 apiece.

12:40 p.m.:Reese makes like Rod Woodson and leaps high to snag Clark's errant pass then drives into Boston to draw the foul. She proceeds to sink her two free throw attempts as Chicago extends its lead to three points.

12:39 p.m.:Reverse layup falls for Clark, who maneuvered easily beyond Marina Mabrey to get to the cup.

12:32 p.m.:NaLyssa Smith sinks the floater as she pulls herself to nine points on the day. She's shown something at all three levels of the floor so far.

12:31 p.m.:Another basket by Kamilla Cardoso, who – in her first career game — has shown glimpses of why the Sky selected her froth overall in last year's draft. She's up to six points on the day.
