Historical Romance Collection (Christian)

PUBLISHER: Kregel
RELEASE DATE: August 13, 2024

One Perfect Dress–three different Love stories

In this brand-new novella collection, three renowned Christian historical fiction authors trace generations of wartime romances through a special wedding dress with love sewn into its seams.

“A Heart in Disguise” by Rachel Scott McDaniel

Clara Westlake loves her job as a seamstress in the US “Camouflage Corps,” sewing suits for snipers and contributing to the war effort. But when she overhears a threat against her beloved New York City, the Great War comes too close to home–except no one believes her forewarning. She must recruit Marcus Reeves, a childhood friend searching for his purpose after suffering a devastating war injury. As they search for answers together, they may also uncover a love that lasts.

“A Letter to Eli” by Allison Pittman

Bette and Alice are lifelong friends, trying to make a good life for themselves in New York City while World War II rages. It’s never far away from their thoughts–not with Alice’s fiancé serving at sea, in danger every minute. That’s a worry Bette doesn’t envy. Then a secret letter reunites her with her soldier ex-boyfriend, now wounded and back in the States. But can the innocent love these two had before the war be rekindled in the face of tragedy?

“A Daffodil in the Dress” by Susie Finkbeiner

Kate Becker and Ike Finch have worked together at his family’s bookstore since Kate’s husband died in the early days of the Vietnam War. She has her daughter, Eloise, to take care of and bills to pay, and this job was a godsend. A second love is not in the cards, especially not with the world still teetering on the edge of insanity. But when Ike brings little Eloise special flowers one spring day, Kate begins to look at him as more than an employer. Is falling in love again worth the risk?

My Something Borrowed Novella Collection Playlist

by Susie Finkbeiner, author of Something Borrowed

It will surprise absolutely no one that I have a certain affinity for the music of the 1960s. So, when given the opportunity to put together a playlist for my part of the Something Borrowed Historical Romance Novella CollectionA Daffodil in the Dress, set in 1969—the struggle I find is trying to keep the list from being a hundred pages long.

So, to pare it down by about 99 pages, I’m going to go with a bit of a theme! I’m sticking with the flower vibe of my story to bring you my 1960s Flower Power Playlist. I hope you enjoy it!

1. Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel (1966): Of course I had to kick off the list with the dulcet vocals of Paul and Art! Rosemary is for remembrance and this song is completely unforgettable!

2. Safe in my Garden by The Mamas and the Papas (1968): This groovy tune is a lesser known hit from the folksy quartet, but one that is chalk full of metaphor. If you haven’t yet, give this one a listen. It’s far out.

3. Where Have All the Flowers Gone by Peter, Paul, & Mary (1962): Okay, so a lot of people recorded this one in the 1960s. But, for my money, Mary Travers sang it best. I actually had the opportunity to hear them perform this song live in East Lansing, Michigan in 1996 when I was 18 years old. I also may have chased Paul Stookey’s limo as they were leaving. Yeah. I’m a super fan.

4. Build Me Up Buttercup by The Foundations (1968): I dare you not to bob your head when you hear this one! If you can keep still then you have more restraint than me. This song is boppy and fun and perfect for sing-a-longs.

5. San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) by Scott McKenzie (1967): I’ve never been to San Francisco. But if I ever get the chance, this song has thoroughly prepared me for the visit. First, wear flowers in my hair. Second, meet gentle people. Third, find a love-in (but not a scandalous one). Got it.

6. I Love the Flower Girl by The Cowsills (1967): What a sweet and wholesome song! If ever in the dead of winter you need a little cheering up, give this song a listen and you’ll feel peachy keen.

7. I Got You, Babe by Sonny & Cher (1965): Without a doubt, one of my favorite duet songs ever! I mean, the song is so peppy that one can’t help but sing along with Cher as she sings about having “flowers in the spring”!

All right, all right. I’d better stop myself before I completely take over this blog.

Hey, what don’t we continue the playlist in the comments? I’d love to hear what flower songs YOU love! Go ahead and share some of them from any era.

Note from Carrie: one of mine is Flowers on the Wall – Home Free’s version from 2020 (sorry, Statler Brothers!)
